Write Product Descriptions That Make People Click
Write Product Descriptions That Make People Click
Let’s be honest. Some product descriptions on Nigerian eCommerce platforms look like they were typed in a hurry during a NEPA outage. Just “Red dress. Size 10.” Or “Nice shoes for boys.” No shade, but come on. We can do better.
If you’re selling online, your words are just as important as your pictures. Maybe even more.
This isn’t schoolwork. You don’t need big grammar or dictionary English. You just need to describe your product in a way that makes someone say, “Omo, I need this!”
Here’s how.
Rule One: Talk like a human, not a brochure
Nobody says “utilize” or “commence” in real life. So why use that in your product listing?
Example:
Don’t say: “This item is fabricated from high-quality textile materials.”
Try this instead: “It’s made with smooth, durable fabric that feels good on your skin.”
Easy.
Rule Two: Say what it is and why it matters
Think of your description as a gist with a purpose. You’re telling the buyer:
- What the product is
- What it does
- Why it’s useful
- Who it’s for
- What makes it special
Here’s what that might look like for a basic shea butter listing:
“Our 100% raw shea butter is straight from the source in Kwara. Rub it on dry skin, stretch marks, or cracked heels and thank us later. No chemicals, no drama. Just pure goodness.”
Rule Three: Think like your customer
What would they want to know before buying?
- Can I wash it?
- Will it fit me?
- Is it rechargeable?
- Is this original or “first-grade”?
- Is it good for gifts?
Answer these things in your product write-up so they don’t have to chat you up for every small detail.
Rule Four: Don’t just describe it, sell the vibe
This is where you stand out. Your words can make a N5,000 bag look like it belongs in a magazine.
Plain:
“Brown leather bag with zip.”
Better:
“This brown leather beauty is big enough for your essentials and bold enough to turn heads. Whether it’s Monday meetings or Friday turn-ups, this bag’s got your back.”
See the difference? One is just a description. The other sells the experience.
Rule Five: Sprinkle in keywords but make it natural
Google loves keywords like “Ankara handbag Nigeria” or “affordable skincare in Lagos.” But people hate keyword stuffing. Find the balance.
A good example:
“This Ankara tote bag is handmade in Nigeria using bright, bold fabric. It’s perfect for market runs, church Sundays, or gifting your bestie.”
Don’t overdo it. Just blend the keywords in like pepper in your stew.
Things to stop doing today
- Writing in all CAPS
- Leaving the description blank
- Copying text from other sellers
- Listing features with no explanation
- Using 5 words for a 5,000 naira item
If your product is worth buying, it’s worth describing well.
